Danville
Firefighters IAFF Local 429 in
conjunction with the Friendly Tavern of
Danville will be sponsoring our 14th
annual Poker Run on Saturday, July 7,
2012.
The Friendly’s
Poker Run started in the summer of
1999. This will be our 8th
consecutive event with the Friendly
Tavern. Our goal is to raise money for
local charities. In the past 13 years,
over $69,000 has been generated for
charitable organizations such as; Shop
With A Cop, Make a Wish Foundation,
Faith In Action, MDA, The Family
Readiness Group, Aunt Martha’s Health
Clinic, The Danville Area Food Pantry,
The Red, White, & Blue Child Passenger
Safety Team, Project Success, C.A.S.A,
and Peer Court.
Every year, we have
been consistent in organizing a
successful event. In 1999, The Friendly
started with a group of 80 motorcycles.
Since then, the numbers have increased
to over 500 motorcyclists with over 700
participants.

2012 Poker Run Charities
The 2012 Poker Run will be held
on July 7. Registration will start
the night before and at 10AM on the
day of the ride and the ride will
leave promptly at NOON. This year,
since our nation’s birthday
celebration is in such a close time
frame to our run, we have chosen to
celebrate the freedom’s that we are
provided and to honor those brave
men and women that make it possible.
This year we will be partnering with
the Veteran’s Administration Illiana
Health Care System in Danville, IL
as well as the Forty and Eight
Veteran’s Organization.
Funds donated for our partners at
the VA will help to provide clothing
for the needy veterans. Last year
their organization helped to provide
basic clothing to nearly 1,000
veterans and coats to over 100, yet
still fell short of meeting their
needs. Because of new federal
regulations and due to health
concerns of communicable diseases,
the VA is no longer able to accept
used clothing, which means that all
clothing must be purchased new. All
of the clothing for our local
veteran’s are purchased right here
in Danville. Therefore, your
donations will not only help to put
warm clothes on the backs of the men
and women who have helped fight for
our country, but the dollars helping
them are being kept right here in
our local economy in doing so.
Funds donated for our partners with
the 40&8 organization will be used
for Nurses’ Training Programs.
Currently the 40&8 is only able to
fund three scholarships per year to
nursing students. With the funds
generated from this activity, we
hope to be able to provide even more
educational opportunities. Once
again, this is a program that gives
right back to our community. The
scholarships provided are to
students attending either Lakeview
College of Nursing or Danville Area
Community College Nursing Program,
and our local veterans are the ones
to thank for organizing these
efforts.
This year’s event focuses on our
freedoms and our veterans, but
without the men and women who
participate in our poker run and all
of the contests, it would not be a
success. Thanks to all of the bikers
and members of the community who
come out to support such a great
cause! This year’s ride looks even
more promising than year’s past with
bigger prizes, a new route, and
great entertainment! We hope to see
all of you there!!
